My Experience Being Homeless in Anne Arundel County

There was a point in my life where I truly did not know where I was going to sleep. No backup plan. No stable place to stay. Just trying to make it through one day at a time.

When people think about homelessness, they usually picture someone standing on a corner asking for money. What they do not always see is everything happening behind the scenes: trying to find transportation, trying to stay clean, trying to charge a phone, trying to eat, and trying to figure out where you are safe to go next.

That uncertainty wears on you mentally very quickly.

How Quickly Things Can Change

A lot of people think homelessness happens slowly, but sometimes it happens fast. One difficult situation can turn into several at once.

Suddenly you are trying to figure out:

  • Where am I sleeping tonight?
  • How do I get food?
  • How do I get around without money?
  • Where can I shower or charge my phone?

Once you lose stability, even simple things become difficult.

The Reality People Do Not Always Talk About

There were times when addiction made everything worse. There were days I missed shelter intake times because I was not making good decisions.

When that happens, there is usually no second chance that night. You are outside until morning.

A lot of people do not realize how quickly one mistake can affect the rest of the day when you are homeless.

Getting Around Without a Car

Transportation became one of the hardest parts of surviving day-to-day. Resources in Anne Arundel County are spread out between places like Glen Burnie, Annapolis, Pasadena, and Brooklyn Park.

MTA buses and local transit routes became extremely important because they made it possible to reach shelters, food programs, libraries, job interviews, and appointments without needing a car.

Without transportation, everything becomes harder very quickly.

The Places That Helped Me Keep Going

Libraries, shelters, churches, food pantries, and outreach programs all became important. Not just because of the services they offered, but because they gave me places to regroup, think clearly, and focus on what came next.

  • Shelters that offered meals and a safe place to sleep
  • Food programs and churches that helped with meals
  • Libraries that provided computers, internet, and charging outlets
  • Outreach programs that helped connect people to resources

Sometimes just having access to a shower, a meal, or a safe indoor space made a major difference mentally.

The Mental Side of Homelessness

What people often do not see is the mental exhaustion that comes with homelessness.

It is difficult trying to stay focused and make good decisions when every day feels unstable. You are constantly thinking ahead:

  • Where will I sleep?
  • Will I miss shelter intake?
  • Can I charge my phone?
  • How do I get to the next place?

That constant stress affects people more than most realize.

Getting Clean

I have been clean since October 8, 2018.

Recovery did not happen overnight. It took time, accountability, support, and making the decision to stop repeating the same cycle.

Once things started improving, I realized how difficult it can be to find accurate, organized information about resources when you are in survival mode.

Why I Built This Website

I created this site because I know what it feels like to spend hours trying to figure out where to go for help.

You should not have to search endlessly just to find a meal, a shower, transportation information, or a shelter intake time.

The goal of this website is simple: make Anne Arundel County resources easier to find for people who need help right now.

You are not stuck forever, even if it feels like it right now.

If you are struggling today, focus on the next step. Not the next year. Not everything at once. Just the next step forward.
